Winter in Interlaken

During the long winter season, the mountains of the Bernese Oberland are covered in a thick layer of snow. Winter sports enthusiasts from Switzerland and abroad travel en masse into the mountains to experience the snow and the unique Swiss atmosphere at its best. Skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, walking or tobogganing; all in a fairytale setting. There are four important ski resorts around Interlaken. Grindelwald/Wengen is the largest with 213 kilometres of pistes, almost half of which are equipped with snow machines, so they can be optimally prepared even if there is low snowfall. Here you will find alpine skiing at the highest level: such as the dizzying Lauberhornstrecke in Wengen, for the more experienced skiers. For a more relaxed, recreational day’s skiing then you can head to the resorts of Simmental, Saanenland, Adelboden and Hasliberg which are less demanding and more family orientated.

The closest ski resort is Meiringen, offering winter sports facilities for the whole family. It is very easy to reach from the resort, thanks to the free ski shuttle bus service, which drops you off right next to the ski lift. Axalp is opposite the resort and is best known for being child-friendly, with good beginners’ slopes. A small-scale ski resort, where even the youngest visitors can enjoy the snow in the Axiland children’s paradise. There is a view of the lake and Resort Brienzersee from Axalp.

Summer in Interlaken

Interlaken sits on the edge of both Lake Brienz and Lake Thun and is an ideal base from with to explore the glorious alpine waters in the summer by sailboat, cruise ship, or on foot. Interlaken offers an amazing array of water activities and experiences. Take a dip in the cool refreshing lake waters, enjoy a picnic by the water’s edge, or soak up the sun at one of the regional lakeshore lidos. For golfers the attractive 18-hole championship course is set in idyllic surroundings along the shores of Lake Thun – all with views of the towering Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains.
